    I usually use the Power Functions M-Motor, but if you just connect it directly to the end of the drive shaft and power directly with one of the standard battery boxes, it will run pretty fast. In the video, I'm powering the motor using the rechargeable battery box, which has a built in speed controller. You could also put the IR receiver in the mix and control the speed using the IR speed remote control. Or you could gear down the motor.

    In the new model, you have to remove the technic brick insert on the side panel to engage the crank with the axle.
