VW Golf MK1 Cabriolet

My 5th alternative model out of a Mini Cooper.

As many of my other MOCs this one is also fragile to a certain degree. But fgee has made the great improvement guide to make this MOC more sturdy. You can download this guide and try it out!

The pdf instructions are in a separate MOC.

Before trying to build please read the following carefully.

– This model is not recommended for persons under 14 years of age and those with little experience in building more complex models.

– The assembly is likely to take quite a bit of your time. It might be the reason for exasperation and nervous breakdowns, can cause unpleasant sensations in the fingers.

– The model is very fragile and is intended to be admired from its spot on a shelf, it is not suitable for active games.

Hi, how do I purchase the instructions? Thanks
    • 11 months, 2 weeks ago buildme Level 14 Designed this MOC
If you have iPad, I recommend you to do this from the App Store. Otherwise a PDF preview you can find here: pdf, the link to “pay with PayPal” is at the last page.

While waiting for the Porsche I tried out also the Golf cabrio. The build is sometimes difficult and some parts are not attached that stable, BUT! The result is astonishing. It's a great model. It has got the proportions of the Golf and the details of the GLI trim very accurate, and the dual color white-green livery is cool.

In particular, I love the boot door to open, highly detailed engine, the nicely shaped dashboard, the pedalry, and the overall richness of details.

On the other hand there are some things that I, like many others, would like to be fixed. So I was curious: Could it be done?  The answer is: YES! I did many changes on the Golf, which are invisible after the change - except of the mudguards, which I placed 1 plate higher, for more freedom beteen wheel and mudguard.

How could I share my result with the community, without compromising the instructions sold by buildme?
Finally I came out with my Improvement Guide. I think it's ok that way - if not, let me know.

Overall, I like the smooth bodywork, precise and clear PDF instructions, and highly used creative building technologies. It was great fun to build it, and since it is relatively easy to modify, it was also great fun to fiddle around until it has got sturdy.

buildme, thank you very much for sharing your Golf cabrio with us! Your are invited to include my changes into the "official" instructions, if you like to do so.

Now I'm going to try out xx1Andi's Version :-)
(still looking forward for the Porsche)

Thank you! Your improvement guide so great and clear. I've added the link to it on the model description. Regarding the official instructions I think not to merge your improvements because: a) this will be another model, and b) builders will have an option to choose which modification to build. Again your work so nice!
P.S. Green Porsche is also available in PDF.
      • 11 months, 3 weeks ago fgee Level 12 MOC Designer
You're welcome, it was great fun to work on the Golf.
Regarding the options which modifications to build, I think you are right! This is a good point.
        • 11 months, 3 weeks ago fgee Level 12 MOC Designer
I've found two errors in the Improvement Guide and made another little change regarding the last green 1x1 tile required for the window frame. Since the Improvement Guide also is stored somewhere in a server cache, I was forced to give it a modified file name. Thus I adjusted the link in my comment, but the link in your comment points still to the "old" Improvement Guide. And as long as it is in a server cache, the "old" one will be delivered. Thus, please adjust your link. Thank you.

            Good, fixed.
            • 11 months, 1 week ago fgee Level 12 MOC Designer
I've finally converted the improvement guide to a "sturdiness kit". It brings the modifications in the order of the PDF building steps, and has got more details about the new sub-units. But still doesn't compromise your instructions.

And since you consider it to be a new model, I submitted it as a new MOC. Here is the Sturdiness Kit for buildme's VW Golf Mk1 Cabrio!

Bought this set to build your MOC. Great looking MOC! Really good in certain details too. Lower front part proved a bit difficult to build as designer was limited to de set's bricks, if other bricks where included this lower front part could've been more robust. Other then this, a great build and money (building manual) well spent!

This build is terrible. I paid the $7.99 on the App Store and got a refund shortly after. It is more unstable than Donald Trump. Don't waste your money.

I am sorry to hear this. Unfortunately, I have to choose between appearance and structural integrity.

Bought the PDF instructions, extremely quick digital delivery. They were very clear and concise.

As someone else mentioned in the comments, this is a very tedious build. Many parts held on with 1 peg, which can't be accessed easily to fix if necessary. I also enjoyed the challenge, just not something you might want to give to your 12 year old.

This model is as good as it gets when it comes to re-purposing the Mini, but I would build this again if a dedicated MOC came out.

Great work, would consider buying more MOCs from Buildme.

I've finally finished a pdf version, you can find a preview here.

So frustrating I want to build both the golf and the ivco truck but I don't have iTunes and all friends are also on android. Would you not consider a pdf file via email?????
    • 2 years, 6 months ago buildme Level 14 Designed this MOC
At this moment my instructions are available for iOS devices only. The reason I described in comments below. But for test I am planning to make a pdf for my next model.
      • 2 years, 5 months ago Legomarkuk Level 12
I managed to get an old iphone I had knocking around and downloaded from iTunes as it said free only to find o my the first 20 steps of the build i am wanting both the iveco truck and the hot rod v10 but plan prices are a bit steep 7.
6.99 each model i would happily  pay that for all of the premium ones but not individual it's a bit much
        • 2 years, 5 months ago buildme Level 14 Designed this MOC
Totally agree, LEGO is not a cheap hobby.
          • 2 years, 5 months ago Legomarkuk Level 12
your builds are brillient but maybe put your build pdf's into one price rather than individual. pleeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaassssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeeee :-)

Very nice build. Sometimes it was tricky to build, but that makes it a fun challenge. Especially for this model I bought this mini. Keep on the good work.
  • 2 years, 9 months ago xx1Andi Level 13 MOC Designer
Without buying the insturction I have also built my own version of this fantastic car.
  • 2 years, 10 months ago johnenty Level 3
I wish I had read the comments about the instructions only being for apple devices before buying a 2nd mini to build the golf :(
    • 2 years, 10 months ago buildme Level 14 Designed this MOC
Yeah, unfortunately, our instructions are currently only available for iOS devices. Maybe you have a friend with an iPhone/iPad willing to help you out?
      • 2 years, 8 months ago PurpleBantha Level 4
Do you think you could make them Chrome accessible?
    • 2 years, 7 months ago gmm213 Level 4
You could possibly emulate an apple device on a computer
    • 2 years, 10 months ago buildme Level 14 Designed this MOC
Thank you. I agree that other Creator Expert models are great candidates for rebuilding.
      • 2 years, 10 months ago TeagueO Level 24 MOC Designer
probably true, I think all creator models have great rebuilding potential.
  • 2 years, 10 months ago BrickNerd Level 2
I want the instruction, but i dont have any apple products :( How can i get this?
    • 2 years, 10 months ago buildme Level 14 Designed this MOC
Unfortunately, my product is currently only available on iOS devices. Maybe you have a friend with an iPhone/iPad who would be willing to help you out?
      • 2 years, 10 months ago _this_is_cheetah Level 2
Hello there! I also would really love to buy the instructions but same as BrickNerd, I have no iOS device at my disposal. Is there any way for you to export the instructions as .pdf file and I can donate the money via PayPal? That would be really great!
        • 2 years, 10 months ago buildme Level 14 Designed this MOC
I’m not planning to make instructions in other formats in the nearest future, I already explained why, so just copy it here.

I designed my instructions to be used in an interactive way only. I often place new parts partially or completely hidden from view but the interactive feature makes it obvious what goes where. Therefore to make it into a printed/PDF version I would have to redo and test it which is quite laborious and time-consuming and will take another three weeks of my free time. Considering that Lego is just one of my hobbies in which I can only engage in my free from work and family time, I can't exactly allow myself to do this right now.
  • 2 years, 10 months ago Blanchy Level 6
Are all the parts for this in the mini kit?
I think I'll buy the kit just to make this :)

Excellent model. I do notice that the VW 1x1 round tile is an extra part as well, and FYI it's not listed in the parts inventory.
        • 2 years, 10 months ago buildme Level 14 Designed this MOC
You are right but I think this VW 1x1 round tile is an option and this model looks well with plain round tile from Mini Cooper set without VW label. The only necessary part is steering wheel because one from the original set it is oversized.
  • 2 years, 10 months ago MPBL360 Level 5
This is so cool. Realy want to build it :)
  • 2 years, 10 months ago xx1Andi Level 13 MOC Designer
Oh my dear!  I really love it. Great work. By the way:  I am owning a MK1 cabriolet in green :)
  • 2 years, 10 months ago prototyp Level 15 MOC Designer PRO
Fantastic! That's very very crisp, and looks as well sorted as a proper set without any of the compromises alt-builds seem to have. Now I kind of want to buy the Mini set too...
