If anyone is on the fence about upgrading their 42009 to the ultimate, i just finished and it is well worth the effort.

I am fascinated by this model and are homing in closer and closer on giving it a try. The problem is that I do not have any PF parts, and I am hesitant to buy those if PF goes the way of the dodo over the next few month. Motors and such I don't find problematic, you can always do a little cable work to hook those up directly I guess, but as cool as I find the constructed Remote Jurgen created, I would really prefer to use something like the SBrick over the impractical IR system that seemingly has no future. Has anyone any hints or leads to make this work, or are the functions simply too many for a single SBrick or something of that kind?
    • 2 months, 1 week ago Technut78 Level 6
The model has 8 motors, so for starters you would need 2 SBricks. I assume you can use 2 together. I only own 1, so i've never tried

If i was you, i would buy the PF stuff 2nd hand/used. If you were to buy all those PF bits required in new condition, it would indeed be quite expensive for a system with an apparently limited remaining life. Having said that, even if Lego do fully kill off PF, the existing parts will still work.

The main thing i think Ultimate 42009 could really do with is servo steering. Hainvg recently built it, and now in a testing/troubleshooting/improving phase, i have found the steering using a regular M motor quite hard to get used to
      • 1 month, 2 weeks ago SteveL Level 13
They will not go the way of the dodo because of the S brick compatibility. If anything they will be cheaper when the new stuff starts coming out. I just finished this model and it is amazing.

I have just created a cable guide to add on to this wonderful moc. Check it out, it is Moc Number 23787. Not many pieces required, but looks good.😀

Which software have you used to make the building instructions?
  • 11 months, 2 weeks ago zitounesup Level 3
Just built this MOC - it's a great one!!

I noticed I have a couple a parts left over from the additional parts list - maybe I bought too many of them.

On page 288, the two parts featured to attach the baseplate of the turntable to the truck structure leave 4 pins "in the air": these are the black (2780) and blue pins (6558) p274 and the two blue pins p276. I have added one 9-holes lift arm to each structure built on p.288 - that way there's no space left between the structures p288 and the baseplate.
Also noted 2 pins in the structure p157 are left "in the air" - it's easy to insert them back inside the side structures.

just finished. very very very cool!
  • 1 year, 12 months ago Brickfan Level 15 MOC Designer
I have been making my way through this brilliant MOC and discovered a problem with the turntable for the superstructure (pages 200 and 201).
The basic issue is that you MUST have a type 2 turntable. I only have type 3 turntables, and that slight difference means that the 8 tooth which drives around the outside of the turntable is at an angle and under a lot of stress when you attach the 9L axle to hold it in place (step 9), so I will have to order in a type 2 turntable before I can continue. I just did not realise that I needed such and that I had sold my only type 2 turntable about 5 years ago :)
    • 1 year, 11 months ago Brickfan Level 15 MOC Designer
Well I purchased a type 2 turntable and it all works perfectly :) onward!

Got it finished last year, though not true to the yellow colour scheme. Excellent model :)

i did the same thing on his ultimate excavator thinking there wasn't a difference. Found out the hard way and wont make that mistake again, lol.
          • 1 month, 2 weeks ago Brickfan Level 15 MOC Designer
Yes, it was such a small difference in size, yet its impact was big.

Hi everyone, I am planning to build this impressive MOD.  However, does anyone know if the instruction from Jurgen's website has been updated to correct the previous errors?  I am worried that if there are still errors in the instruction, I won't be able to figure out the correct way to fix them since I am new to the MOC / MOD world.  Can anyone help me out here?  Thanks in advance!

I just did the same, much better function and it don't need the clutch. Less parts :-)

I saw the 2-year-old post which provides the channel settings for the IR receivers, but it's not easy to find. Perhaps this information should be displayed more prominently?

I just acquired the 42009... it's an amazing set!

I'd like to mod it following Jurgen's instructions and am readying a parts list (wow, is it expensive!). Like a few others I've noticed a discrepency between the required parts list on this page and the required list in the instructions (found on Jurgen's home page). For example...

    4 X 99773
    2 X 30097
    10 X 74695

    ...among others.

Which shall I follow? Jurgen's image? Or the list on this site?
  • 3 years, 9 months ago AdamHeard Level 2
Jurgen's site appears to be down, are the instructions backed up anywhere else?

Can anyone help, I have now build the it twice but the stabilisers still won't come out? The White gear in the middle turns along with the little gear to the side but the grey 16 tooth next to the white and the 20 tooth tan one underneath doesn't? please help
  • 3 years, 11 months ago jgw3000 Level 5 MOC Designer
I fixed the gear clash issue on page 207 - step 22, 24T gear damages the yellow pin connector, and also uncovered a potential error in the instructions. In step 4, page 208, the black 2L pin has no second connection later on. Remove it, and then move the blue pin 3L into its location. Move the yellow pin connector accordingly (step 5) and now the gear is free to spin without interference. The black pin goes into the blue pin's hole, but projecting out to the other side, to connect to the black beam placed later on the same page. I'm guessing this is was was intended all along.

      Hello Janko2104,

I'm in the process of aquiring all of the extra parts for this build and came upon your comment. I realize that the 42009 set has 10 Krydsaksel M / Stop 4m 1 piece 4239601, and that the Image on Jurgen's page says you need 2 extras; that makes 12. But then the brickstock data base that Jurgen also put up says you need 13. So my question is, do you need 13 total Krysaksel pieces or 14?

      • 3 years, 11 months ago Janko2104 Level 4
in additional-parts list are 2 pieces and must be 3 pieces because in original lego are 10 pieces answer on your question is 13 pieces.

I have just started to build the crane but I have got to step 14 page 8 and it shows a cross axle 4M and 2m cross axle extension but I can't see where they go?
    • 3 years, 12 months ago darkstonegrey Level 11 Set Manager
It's a mistake in the instructions. Those two parts are already placed in step 12 page 7.

There are a couple other errors in the instructions later in the build as well:

      ultimate 42009 instructions - errors

      page 8
      step 14
      l-grey axle connector 1x dup step 12
      black 4 axle 1x dup step 12

      page 51
      step 10
      l-grey beam 3x5 right angle 2x should be 1x
      d-grey 4 axle w/stop 2x should be 1x

      page 124
      step 8
blue long pin 2x should be black pin 2x
(see page 126 step 62, shows reverse side of engine block)

      page 124
      step 9
black pin 3x should be 2x
blue long pin 1x should be 2x

      page 297
      step 3
      missing black pin 1x ?
(compare to page 290 step 3)

      page 366
      step 10
blue connector 1x should be 2x
